Hazlet Record Show 09.30.07

30 09 2007

Hazlet Scores

Before I get into the record show details, I want to shout out DJ Andy Smith who hit me up and let me know he’s going to be here in the States doing a few dates. He’ll be at the Ben Sherman Store in Boston, MA on Oct. 19th, and APT in the West Village of NYC on the 20th alongside Chairman Mao, David Griffiths, Jared Boxx, and Mr. Fine Wine. This will be an all 45 show, and should not be missed. I will be in attendance for sure. Andy Smith is not only a great DJ, but his superior digging skills show in his Document Mix series. He’s able to cross genres with ease, and hopefully I’ll be able to get him at the 45 Sessions some time in the future.

Since I did so well last time, and since the show is about 30 minutes closer to my house, I was pretty excited to hit up this record show. It’s not the best, but I seem to always find stuff. When the show was in Edison at the Raritan Center, I was able to score great Jazz, Reggae, and some clean Funk and Soul. The inaugural show at the Holiday Inn was pretty decent. Although there was a monsoon out, I got away with about 60+ 45s and the crowd was ok. This time, Funky 16 Corners and I opted for the super early admission ($20), and met DJ Prime and Jersey’s best kept beat maker Skills early to beat the crowds. Record shows are honestly usually really beat for the most part (exception is FMU), but hate to spend a mint on records, paying dealer prices for shit I can dig up myself with a little hard work, and for a fraction of the price. There were a lot of the usual spot suspects, as well as the record dealers that are always lingering around the Tri-State and East Coast shows. From Allentown to Asbury Park, they were all representing.

I was able to dig up some cool stuff, and left pretty happy. Here are the scores, most (if not all) will be added to the review que for your listening pleasure (in blog or mix post) in the near future. It was all about 45s today (isn’t it always?), and I’m happy I got out.

Got My Rhythm Back, and Avoided A Riot

29 09 2007

Cha Cha

It’s always nice to take a week off from my usual spot. It just so happened that I was fortunate to get some other digging in in PA, but coming back to the spot always gives me a good feeling. It gives me a good feeling no matter if there are records or not. Today there were a few records to be had (and a complete absence of many of the usual suspects), but almost a riot. I swung around my usual route, and finding no one on record row I gravitated to the first record stand (naturally). My guy was there with a batch of 45s in hand, Eggbeard was hovering over the crap Lps, and a few of the other older (and really much cooler) record guys were busting on each other. Usually when my guy gets to a table first, he finds all the stuff I like (and then sells them to me, that’s just how it works), but today I managed to find a few 45s he let slip by. While this first of the morning digging was going on, I hear some yelling, followed by some screaming. Now, I’m not sure if all of you are familiar with the flea market seller stuff, but here is my understanding of it. People pay by the month or day, and your spot is reserved. Some people have had the same spot for years. If you don’t have a reservation, you have to wait until 7:30 to take an open table. Well, a very large woman had 6 tables reserved, and they were all taken. Here’s where the fun starts. The people won’t move, she’s got steam coming out of her ears, and then she threatens to “Clear off her whole table”. Her being a woman who had the irate lady’s table, and just wouldn’t budge. At this point men were walking away. I was even moving down just in case merchandise started flying. You never know when a samurai sword or chainsaw will come flying off the table. It could have been a full fledged riot in September. It was quite comical, and at that point I realized why I love the flea markets (besides the vinyl)……..the people. The Meatball was walking around, and tried to sell me some 45, but I wasn’t really interested (of course he probably wanted $50 for a scratched, rinked, warped side). In and out in about 2 hours, I didn’t get much, but here’s the haul:

45s:

Friends of Distinction - Grazing In the Grass/ RCA
Shadow Mann - Come Live With Me/ Tomorrow’s Productions
Syndicate of Sound - Little Girl/ Bell
Jimmy Smith - The Organ Grinder’s Swing/ Verve
Ruby Andrews - I Just Don’t Believe It/ Zodiac
Tamiko Jones - Ya Ya/ CTI
King Curtis - Changes/ ATCO
South Side Movement - Keep On Doing It/ Honey
The Larks - The Jerk/ Money
Bob Brady & the Con Chords - It’s A Better World/ Chariot
The Jazz Crusader - Ooga Boo-ga/ World Pacific
The Family - Family Affair/ North Bay
Clarence Reid - Funky Party/ Alston
Theola Kilgore - As Long As You Need Me/ Serock
Little Royal & the Swingmasters - Razor Blade/ Tri Us
Celi Bee & the Buzzy Bunch - Superman/ APA
The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Bertha Butt Boogie/ Atlantic
Jessie Hill - Ooh Poo Pah Doo/ Minit

Lps:

Jerry Butler - Sings Assorted Sounds/ Mercury
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis Bold As Love/ Reprise
Fats Waller - Plays and Sings/ Jazztone
Eric Burden - Declares War/ MGM
Eric Burdon and War - The Black Man’s Burdon/ MGM
Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway - Self Titled/ Atlantic

Like I said, not a huge haul, but some decent pieces. The Family 45 on North Bay is a great Sly Stone cover, and all in all I’m happy. We’ll see how the record show goes tomorrow. Pictures and a full report will follow of course. I’m also almost done with a Jazz mix, called The Real Roast: Soulful Jazz for Sunday Mornings, which I’m pretty excited to drop. Some of you Jazz heads might recognize the cover design’s inspiration. I’m shooting for Monday with that. Look for me tonight on Fox Soccer Channel as I’ll be back in the Supporters section of the NY Red Bulls (behind the goal), as they look to clinch a playoff spot tonight against Real Salt Lake. Also, let’s hope for a Liverpool win today as well. Hope you enjoyed the banter, and a few photos of today. Keep Diggin’!

This guy had no records, but he did have a creepy ass stuffed squirrel.

The Sand Pebbles - Love Power

28 09 2007

Sand Pebbles

Love Power 45

The Sandpebbles - Love Power from the Calla 45

As I sit here tonight sifting through my que piles, I decided that as of late, I needed to hear so more Soul. I popped on the cover Lp “Solid Soul” by the Soul Buttercups (a definite review in the near future), and my mood turned Soulful for the rest of the evening, so here we are. I have so much Soul, whether it be sweet, funky, or jazzy. I am going to make it a point to incorporate it a bit more here at FMF, it’s just that good. Vince from FuFu Stew dropped a Sand Pebbles gem during the 45 Sessions this past month, which led me to drag out another side of theirs I had in the “to be reviewed” pile. So, without any further delay, let’s jump into “Love Power” by the Sand Pebbles from 1967 on Calla Records.

The Calla label was based out of New York City, and run by Nate McCalla, a man who had an open ear for music of different styles. McCalla ran a powerful black owned Soul label, and had a stable of assorted artists such as Little Jerry Williams (who later became Swamp Dogg) J.J. Jackson (of “I Dig Girls” fame), Jean Wells, the Emotions, the Fuzz, Lonnie Youngblood, and Geraldine Hunt among others. They even released some sides by the Persuaders during the mid 70’s. Part of Roulette records (but operating independently), as stated before, this label, though small, was a powerful label that released some great sides. They were distributed by Shakat, then later by CBS. The label was around from 1965-1972, taking a few breaks ( 1972-75 ) in between where they didn’t release any records. The Calla label shut it’s doors in 1977. McCalla left the country until 1980, where he returned and was murdered shortly after.

I don’t know too much about the Sand Pebbles, other than they did get their start in the church, only to move on to secular music a little while later. Their main songwriter was Teddy Vann , who would go on years later to share a Grammy with Luther Vandross on “Power of Love/Love Power.” In all, they released around 12 sides, and a greatest hits package was put out that would document the band with their records, plus unreleased sides and exclusive radio ads for the band. This trio consisted of two female and one male vocals, which would provide for some sweet harmonies. “Love Power” is a combination of Sweet Southern style Soul mixed with a tinge of Gospel, which makes for a some super dynamite Soul. I can say for sure that the next Soul mix I do will include this tune. Listen for the horn break down in the middle, followed by drum break from Harold “Smiley” Davis, who was only 16 when he recorded the record in secrecy from the Drum Corps he was in. To give you an idea on just how good this side is, the one and only Dusty Springfield deemed it necessary to put her own spin on this nugget.

It’s going to be a big weekend here at FMF. Both days will be consumed by digging, as I hit the spot on Saturday, then make the biannual Groovy Productions Record Show, at it’s new location in Hazlet, NJ on Sunday. There will be a lot of diggers out, as this show usually brings out the who’s who of NJ producers, DJs, and diggers. While some dealers say it’s a waste, I will disagree. I always find records, and I don’t have to spend a lot of money doing so. That being said, if you see me, say hello. See you over the weekend. Keep Diggin’.

Joe Farrell - Canned Funk

26 09 2007

Joe Farrell

Canned Funk

Joe Farrell - Canned Funk from the CTI Lp “Canned Funk”

Now that I’m back, rested, and ready to go, I thought I’d pull out the newest addition to the FMF stable. It’s a record that I wasn’t really looking for, but decided to pick up because I knew the tune, and I am definitely a fan of the record label, despite the naysayers who claim it’s a “tepid terd”. In fact, I like everything about this label. From the musicians to the cover art, there is a love affair with these records that is still strong. I’ve been reading The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records, and my respect for Creed Taylor has doubled. The guy is amazing, and I will definitely not stop buying CTI records. This record hasn’t shown up at any of my local spots, and well, I had to jump on it. A lot of other CTI records do, and I’ve gotten some great ones throughout my digging career. From George Benson to Hubert Laws, when I see the shiny gate fold cover I can’t resist. Let’s get into Joe Farrell and “Canned Funk” on one of my favorite record labels, Creed Taylor’s CTI, from 1975.

Joe Farrell picked up the clarinet at the age of eleven. He went on to graduate from the University of Illinois, eventually uprooting himself and moving (like many Jazz musicians) to New York City. While in the Big Apple, he linked up with Maynard Fergusen and Slide Hampton. A very accomplished saxophone player and flutist, Farrell has played with a who’s who of Jazz musicians, including Jack DeJohnette,Charles Mingus, Andrew Hill, Herbie Hancock, Jaki Byard, Stanley Clarke, Elvin Jones and as a stand out musician with Chick Corea’s “Return to Forever”. He definitely had a good run during the 70’s with his CTI releases, riding on the coat tails of his success with Fergueson. A nasty drug habit would catch up with him during his final years in Los Angeles, where he worked with a lot of different people, including the Mingus Dynasty and Louis Hayes. He died in 1986.

If the Pete Turner photograph on the cover wasn’t enough, (I mean who ever gets an eyeball in their can of peaches?) the record was produced by Taylor and engineered by the genius known as Rudy Van Gelder in his Englewood Cliffs Studio in December of 1974. The song’s line up was as follows: Joe Farrell (tenor sax); Joe Beck (guitar); Herb Bushler (bass); Jim Madison (drums); and Ray Mantilla (congas and percussion). There’s some heavy Funk/ Jazz/ Fusion going on, and it’s obvious why Farrell’s saxophone sound was sought after during the 70’s. In this period, you had all these heavy Jazz players laying down Funk tracks (or their interpretation of), and apparently playing the role while they recorded. They would don the Funk outfits of the time, and get to work in the studio. The Funk would get into them people, and I can just see heavyweights like Milt Jackson wearing a Walt “Clyde” Frazier hat (complete with feather!) as he funked up the vibes. This is by far the longest side I’ve put on FMF (clocking in at over 7 minutes), but IMHO, it’s a really unique song. If you can’t get a hold of this nugget on vinyl, CTI released a compilation called “The Birth of the Groove”, which we here at FMF highly recommend. I am partial to CTI releases, and this tune is definitely a keeper. I’ll be back on Friday with another side to keep your head nodding. Keep Diggin’!

Records In The Woods

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Well, we made it back in one piece from our camping trip. We stayed an extra day (it was much needed!), so it’s gonna be a short one today. Apparently you can find records in the woods, as illustrated in the photo above. It was great to do nothing except relax, hike, camp, and get a little bit of digging in. I did forget my portable, but made a valuable connection for a return digging trip in the upcoming weeks. 50+ untouched boxes of 45’s that were bought over this winter, and that nobody has gone through yet. I’d like to shout out some dear friends of ours, who run Squindo Dot Net, and showed my wife and I a great time. They do some great posters, paintings, and t-shirt graphics. So if you’re looking for some great designs, please feel free to contact them. Tell them I sent you. Their resume is quite long and with clients such as Metallica and other national acts, you will not be disappointed.

Although I was pretty much computer free the whole time (I kind of caved in the last day), I did manage to get a few scores (all of them Lp’s) in between hikes and making sure the fire didn’t burn out:

Joe Farrell - Canned Funk/ CTI
Elvin Jones - Time Capsule/ Vanguard
Soul Buttercups - Solid Soul/ Premier
The Unifics - Sittin at The Court of Love/ Kapp
Jimmy Smith - Respect/ Verve

See you Wednesday. Keep Diggin’!

Kellee Patterson - I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little More, Baby

19 09 2007

Kellee Patterson

I'm Gonna Love You 45

Kellee Patterson - I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little More, Baby on the Shady Brook 45

As I said in my Soul Tornadoes post, this is going to be my last post until next Monday. I’m taking a few days off to relax with my wife, and from this posting pace that I’ve grown accustomed to. I am going to treat you though to a little bit of goodness before I go, that I came across this past summer while digging. I’m not cover expert, lets say like Oliver over at Soul Sides. I like my covers, the more obscure the better ( I have a few gems in my crates I’ve yet to pull out), but I have to give it up for an artist who covers a Barry White tune. Especially one who does it well. Not too many people can really do that, I mean, there was only one Barry White. However, Kellee Patterson does a great job with her own take on Mr. White’s pantie melting classic: “I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little More, Baby” on Shady Brook Records.

Kellee Patterson grew up in Gary, Indiana. A former beauty pageant queen and talent show winner ( competing against The Jackson 5 on more than one occasion), she started to turn record label heads at a younger age when big guns like Berry Gordy from Motown came courting. Let’s not forget her stints as lead singer of Groovy & the Electras as well. She chose the Black Jazz Label run by pianist Gene Russell and came up with the Jazz gem “Maiden Voyage”. Her version of Herbie Hancock’s signature tune was applauded, but really didn’t do much saleswise. As Russell would fold Black Jazz, he persuaded the singer to move on with him to the Shady Brook label. She would go on to release this record as a single from the album “Kellee”, and move on to release “Be Happy”, her sophomore record. This Lp garnished hits such as “If It Don’t Fit, Don’t Force It” and “Movin’ In The Right Direction”, and “Turn on the Lights”. With the label struggling with financial difficulties, she still managed to release “Let Go, Let Go (Let Love Be The Driver)”, a highly sought after 12″. Not much is known of her after that last record. Rumors surfaced that she may have tried her hand at acting in the UK, but I can not confirm this. All I know is that her great cover of Barry White turned up in a flea market in New Jersey. As I always say, I’m glad it did. Her take on the most famous of the Barry’s (and definitely not *Barry) hit is a great one. Done in a Soulful, Jazzy way, and with her own touch to the tune, I think you will enjoy it. The track itself features Phil Upchurch on bass, Johnny Kirkwood on drums, Marlo Henderson on guitar, and Gene Russell on piano. Like I said earlier, I’m no Oliver Wang, but I know a good cover when I hear one, and this side is one. I will see you next Monday. have a great week/ weekend, and Keep Diggin’!

Diggin Til Monday!

Soul Tornadoes - Funky Thang

17 09 2007

Soul Tornadoes

Funky Thang 45

Soul Tornadoes - Funky Thang from the Burt Records 45

As the playlists and mp3s come in from Friday night’s Asbury Park 45 Sessions, I can agree with Larry over at Funky 16 Corners that the night was probably one of, if not the best session we had since it’s inception. The people, the music, and of course the venue was great. I caught a little flack for my merc of London suit and fedora, but a guy has to look fly once in a while. Also, I got word that we are now listed in the Tools of War - The Grass Roots of Hip Hop newsletter. Watch out for the 45 Sessions kids, we’re catching on! This week is going to be short for me, as I will be taking a short break from my massive pace of posts since March. I’ll have a post for you this fine Monday morning, and another one for Wednesday, but will be back the following Monday. By then I’m hoping to get some scores out of state, so keep your fingers crossed for me. I know mine will be, and ye olde Fisher Price portable will hopefully get a good workout. I got this record at my spot, and of course it was in FMF fashion, drama and comedy filled. Mario Brothers aka Meatball parted with this side, but not without a fight. His sand filled metal 45 box, fresh with scratched Northern Soul sides (”This record was in Stinkie Steve’s Northern Soul guide for 75 pounds”, he’d quip) produced this Midwest gem, and I scooped it up. The label is misprinted, spelling out Soul Toranodoes, and to be honest with you, I just discovered it tonight. I’ve been waiting to get to this record, “Funky Thang” by the Soul Tornadoes on Burt Records. So let’s go to “Rubbertown”, Akron, Ohio, for some middle America Funk.

The Heller twins (not really twins but given that nickname), Charles and Bobby were destined to be in the entertainment business. From the early days of their youth, their mother Lurlene had the”Twistin’ Twins” performing before National Acts at the Hi-Hat Club, and even dancing before the Godfather of Soul, James Brown would take the stage. Encouraged by their mother, who bought them a Hammond B-3 and a drum kit, the Heller boys started to hone their craft. It didn’t hurt that their mother was responsible for guys like Jimmy Smith and Brother Jack McDuff eating her home cooked meals and sleeping at their house when they were in town to play the Hi Hat Club. These boys learned from the pros. They would go on to form a trio (the original Soul Tornadoes), but added a new guitarist James ‘Boots” Smith, and bassist Bruce Martin shortly thereafter. With Charles on the drums, and Bobby on the B3, the Soul Tornadoes started to rip up music like a twister through a trailer park. They signed with Ernest Burt, who owned Burt Records (also Magic City,Mello, Sock-It, and Hello World) and Magic City Studios in Detroit, Michigan. Magic City was close to Hitsville, USA, and they definitely rubbed shoulders with many Motown greats (rumor has it bassist James Jamerson stole a ST riff and used it on Edwin Starr’s “25 Miles”), and even had a chance to sign with the Detroit label. Fate would not let them, as they were locked into a contract they couldn’t get out with Burt. Unfortunately the Soul Tornadoes would see one tragedy after another, whether it be shady dealings in the music industry (their tunes being put out without their knowledge, subsequently not getting paid for said record), death of band members, a royal diss from James Brown (he thought “Go For Yourself” was a straight up rip off of “Cold Sweat”), or disaterous tours. They couldn’t catch a break. Some of the band members (Charles) found their way out to LA to play with Lakeside, only to face more adversity and frustration. They also backed up the Soul singers Jackie Beavers, Jackie Moore, and Jackie Wilson, even going as far to play a gig with Curtis Mayfield. It seemed though, it was destiny that they were to not succeed.

They recorded this record in 1969, supposedly in one session, and it really smokes. It’s a bit more down tempo than the James Brown inspired (copied?) “Go For Yourself”, but the guitar work of Boots really shines. This guitar driven track is fun-kay as hell, while Charles’s Hammond chops like some kind of Judo move throughout the duration of the side. Definitely more on the slower of the Tornadoes songs, it’s still a dusty keeper. We’re fortunate that Jazzman Gerald dug up and reissued this side some 30 years plus after the original was recorded. I’m lucky to have dug up this Midwest slice of goodness here in the Garden State. I’ll see you here midweek. Keep Diggin’!

Michael Jackson and God Are My Co-pilots

16 09 2007

MJ

God is My Copilot

Since I was washed out yesterday, and my digging day shot, I decided to hit up the spot today. Sunday is a great day there (we usually go later), but I hit it up while the temperature was still in the 50’s, and managed to score a great Reggae haul, plus some Jazz, Funk and Soul. Of course the usual suspects were abound, Egg Beard was stopping cars before they unloaded, dillegently trying to uncover some private press jazz 78s, or anything he can get his hands on. I saw him doing his schtick and made a B line for record row. I uncovered some Jazz Lps right away (take that Eggy!), and also a nice copy of Jimmy Smith “The Sermon” on Blue Note, which the E Bay maniac would have fought for for sure. My record guy’s car broke down, but he was still able to get me some great 45s. The Wine Guy was too busy passing out his home made wine at 8am to the Hot Doggy Dog guy ( he sells dirty water dogs and yells out: “Hot Doggy Dog!!!”, this is at 7am too) to even care about his dollar Jazz records. That’s a bonus for me.

So the two pics up top are priceless really. A young man was selling his paintings, and who doesn’t want a naked Micheal Jackson painting circa the Thriller days? The complete shrine to Jesus and the Pope was in a van on the way out. The guy had records, and I climbed in the van and snapped his shrine for driving. God is definitely that cat’s co-pilot, while MJ, well, he’s not the greatest co-pilot, but if you can’t get down to “Off the Wall”, then you just don’t get it. I did have a new guy/gal sighting, who I will call Pat. Dressed in a sleek black number, he/ she was putting out some crocheted items as well as used cleaning products( wtf?), and really to be enjoying it. I was in and out, got my records, and hit the road, jamming to J-Dilla’s “Ruff Draft” on the way home. Sometimes I can listen to those short beats he does for days. My favorite is the English kid singing “Come on Feel the Noise”, and I can just see Jay Dee pounding on the MPC making that beat. That’s what it is at the spot: wild, wild, wild. Here’s today’s scores:

Reggae 45’s, All Jamaican Pressings:

09.14.07 Asbury Park 45 Sessions Recap/ Live Set Download

15 09 2007

uh huh

After a long, and I do mean long night of 45 madness, I’m happy to say the September ‘07 edition of the 45 Sessions was a great success. The music was heavy, the crowd was large, and knowledge was dropped from all the DJs throughout the evening. If you weren’t there, the good people at Jam Now! have our sets archived for your listening pleasure. Now broadcasting over the internet can be a bit dodgy at best, but Jason from Jam Now! was on hand, and really hooked it up. These guys are professionals, and the sound quality for the night is really top notch. I listened several times as we were broadcasting live and it sounded great. As with any live event, nothing ever goes smoothly (there were a few skips, open fader back cues, and a metal 45 cone getting stuck to the turntables; wedged until we had to lube it with lube from the bowling machines to get it off), but the night was spot on. All the DJs delivered the heat as promised, and both of the guests had the crowd and the resident selectors rushing up to the tables to see just what records were being spun. You see, inevitably some of us have the same records, that just happens in the digging world. However, alll 8 of the DJs have their own signature sound, and that makes this night what it is. You know the record is hot when the rest of the DJs get up to see just what the hell the record is, and what we need to put on our want lists. Vincent the Soul Chef did just that. Dropping hot drum break after hot drum break plus a really great selection of sides, he had the dance floor moving, and heads nodding. DJ Save1 got Larry Grogan out of his seat (as well as all of us) more than once to see exactly he had brought down from Providence, RI. Then there was the 45 birthday cake (surprise, surprise) for Larry Grogan, Jack the Ripper’s blood exploding end of set, Connie T.’s tribute to Bobby Byrd, M.Fasis’s kick off set, my gentleman dapper Funk and Soul set with the suit on, and DJ Bluewater once again killing them with HEAVY drums and the sweetest, sweetest Soul. A big shout out to Bob Shannon from WCBS FM in New York City for MCing a little bit and for playing one record that had us all jumping up and down: “The Dog”, by Jimmy McCracklin. Don’t sleep on this guy, he has got 45 heat on the down low. He knows his stuff. He will be the MC for the November Sessions, which tentatively is November 30th. Mark your calander. Here’s my set list for the night and some photos. I need some serious sleep. More set lists as they roll in. Keep Diggin’!
